A Very Special Palm!
Rhapis humilis ‘Slender Lady Palm’, 20-gal, 8 long trunks @ 1.00-1.25” thick, 4 medium trunks @ 0.75-0.80” thick, 3 small trunks; root base is 14” in length into the container. The elegant trunk is covered with ringed fibers. Look carefully to the left side of the R. humilis photo below to see white pink (male) flowers. Because there are only males, reproduction isn’t with seeds but with suckers that require much time, thus this palm is rarely available and if found, is expensive. Best grown in shade or in no-direct-sun bright light. Interested in seeing a mature clump of Rhapis humilis? Go to Balboa Park, San Diego, Casa del Prado Building. Go to the back and find walls that have multiple stands of this palm. The sunlight on these palm leaves is soft so those palms are pristine specimens.
Provenance: I did not keep records of palms when I first joined the PSSC as Membership Chair; there wasn’t a business, just a hobby so no need. I believe that I acquired a 1-gallon R. humilis at a palm society meeting around 1997, planted it on the north side of our home beneath a large Myoporum tree around 2000. This Myoporum tree was planted early-1990’s and was large. The plan was for it to provide shade for this Rhapis humilis. This Myoporum certainly looked to be tough but during a Santa Ana windstorm, thrips blew in from the desert, landed on this tree, and it was flat dead in a matter of weeks. We couldn’t believe our eyes. So, the subject Rhapis humilis has been growing in half-day direct sun all these years, never attaining full 18’ height, yet not really harmed.
Trithrinax campestris, a massive root base with 3 trunks 6”, 4”, 3” base width. It has a 72” spread and is 42” tall. With 29 years of growing palms at Indian Rock, we do not exaggerate when we say this is an exceptional palm and is pure thunder. Leaf color is gray to a blue hue, with light green undersides--truly an admirable specimen. The leaflets are thick and very tough—claimed the toughest leaflet of all palms. Leaflet margins are perfectly smooth (no prickles) but terminate in a stiff, sharp point. Cold hardy to 13°F per Betrock. This palm is quite rare and not readily available. Considered a clumping palm, however this one is quite clean with only 3 trunks.
Please be advised that this palm was grown in an area with underground boulders. The roots were tightly bound to a large, flat rock. This palm is recovering from this arduous dig and removal and will recover by January 2025.
Phoenix theophrasti, the Cretan Date Palm. A clustering, full sun palm. Leaf color is blue green. Spines at the base of the petiole are an ornamental black base leading to yellow orange. Diamond-shaped leaf base and pinnate leaf shape ending with a sharp tip are identical to the Phoenix dactylifera (Date Palm) but with inedible fruit. Cold hardy to 18°F per Palmpedia; easily handles all forms of southern California climates.
This palm has a massive root base having 50 or more 1/2” by 18” long roots. This palm’s parent trunk base is 12”, major offset 4”, three 3” minor offsets with numerous starting offsets; it is the discretion of the new owner which offsets to keep and to discard. It has a 90” spread and is 77” tall.
Chamaedorea microspadix, 20 gallon, 5’ tall from soil line, 27 stems, 2 new shoots, 6 seed clumps, leaflet width 0.8”-1.2”. Although this one was sold, there are others.
Leaflets, very strong, wonderful color, ranging from 0.8” to 1.2” in width
Chamaedorea microspadix, base of palm
Bismarkia nobilis--just 2 are left!
Chambeyronia sp. 'Houailou' (pronounced way-loo) 16 years old, only 6 feet tall, very slow growing but a centerpiece, a specimen. This in-ground palm is available; it will be dug and placed in a 20 gallon container, $400.
